Joe's Cafe

Visited Saturday 5th July 12 p.m.

Seven months ago this former greasy spoon was taken over by Daniel and Jane Cook who have endeavored to turn it into a smart and quirky haven for locals and visitors in need of a good breakfast or brunch.

Don't be put off by the fact that this lovely little cafe is off the beaten track. Situated on Upper Hamilton Road, near the Seven Dials, you need look no further for good quality food at a very reasonable price and a great atmosphere.

This friendly, family run cafe, is the place to go for breakfast and brunch. Expect farm fresh food and local produce catering for everyone. And we mean everyone. If you are vegetarian, vegan, coeliac, hungover, super healthy, love your meat, there is something here for you. The quality of the food is exceptional, and owners Daniel and Jane are clearly passionate about providing the best for their customers and supporting local businesses at the same time.

If you are just looking for a spot to to relax, you can surf the internet on their free WiFi whilst enjoying a coffee or a pot of tea. It's a popularity means that you may have to wait for a seat, but it's definitely worth the wait.

Places like Joe's with it's home-like atmosphere and terrific value for money are what make the cafe culture in Brighton so unique. Don't hesitate to go and see for yourself.

Floriana's Rotunda Cafe, Preston Park

When the blazing heat of the summer sun and the swarming crowds are just too much, seek peace and tranquillity in this deceptively large rotunda, situated in one of the finest relaxation spots in Brighton. Built in 1929 and possibly modelled on the Brighton Pavillion, the origins of this cafe are somewhat a mystery; however, you can really feel the spirit in age in this large, light space.

Sip tea whilst gazing on the dotted lilac and scarlet impressionist picture that is the wild flower garden and inhaling the honeyed scent of the rose garden. Children can learn about the wonders of nature whilst exploring the nearby vegetable garden and will squeal in delight at tadpole sightings in the adjacent shallow pond.

This cafe would really benefit from being able to provide some home-cooked food, but all the basic fare is here to sustain you through the afternoon and to follow is the treat of creamy Carte D’or ice-cream.

Without a doubt, there is no cafe in Brighton with a finer view than this one. Open seven days a week and with wi-fi there is no excuse.

Cafe Marmalade

With a cool, light, tiled interior one can find relief from the fierce midday sun in this delightful little rustic gem at the top of Kemptown. Giving the feel of a Victorian pantry one may be interested to know that this building formerly served as an ice-cream parlour and dairy in the 1940s. To the recent memory one may remember it as the cafe Hudson and Bridges; however, gone are the quirky colours and alternative twists. A fresh lick of neutral colour has brightened and widened, giving patrons a good sense of privacy as they relax within clean simplicity on the ground floor or on the mezzanine.

Smiling faces behind the counter will serve you some delectable eats from the neatly set out display, ranging from the modern to the traditional favourites: fish pie, porridge, bacon sandwiches, salads and CAKE: scones, brownies, flapjacks, rhubarb and ginger etc. This cafe prides itself on sourcing fresh, organic produce from local businesses including Bramptons Butchers and the Real Patisserie, thereby upholding the Brighton spirit of community support.

Enjoy cool relief from the blazing heat and visit the Cafe Marmalade!

Mange Tout

Mange Tout
81 Trafalgar Street
Brighton - BN1 1HG

With its simple, slightly industrial décor and unassuming façade, you might miss Mange Tout whilst walking along Trafalgar Street. Were it not for the throngs of customers happily chatting over their breakfast and brunch it would be easy to write off this little gem of Brighton.

This is a place that has decided to keep it simple, focusing all of their attention on simple but good quality food with a French twist. Their breakfast menu is ideal for giving you all the ingredients you crave in a full English whilst avoiding the river of  grease which so often accompanies it.

For coffee fans, this place is a must. Mange Tout clearly takes its coffee seriously providing their own blend which has been roasted locally. It is decently priced and will impress even the most discerning coffee connoisseur.

Expect to pay more than you would for your average high street café for food but it’s safe to say that they earn the extra few pounds. The service is efficient, the staff polite and helpful. Unsurprisingly, this is a popular choice with the locals so it’s best to book if you are planning a visit, especially if there are a few of you.

Mange Tout is open from 10:00 to 18:00 Monday to Wednesday, 10:00 to 22:00 Thursday, Friday & Saturday and 10:00 to 17:00 on Sunday.
